Manga 1

Volume 1 of the manga.

Non Non Biyori (のんのんびより?) is a manga series by Atto, serialized on Media Factory's Monthly Comic Alive magazine from November 2009. An anime version debuted in October 2013. Manga vs Anime comparison can be found here.

Several manga volumes by other artists than Atto were also published.

Setting and Conception[]

The story is made by reorganizing Atto's former work "Toko-toko" (とことこ?), so the basic setting is the same. Also, some characters of the author's past works appear in the story.

The story set in the countryside village of Asahigaoka, which is pretty far from large cities like Tokyo. Stores are hard to reach and deliveries from large cities always arrive in days or weeks.

Plot and Summary[]

Hotaru Ichijō (一条 蛍?) is a ten/eleven-year-old girl who grew up in Tokyo and moved to a laid-back country village. She makes friends with three girls and discovers the life in countryside there. The story of the manga revolves around these four girls' daily lives.

Etymology[]

"田舎の学校、日々是平穏、仲良くのんびり、穏々日和。 (Inaka no gakkō, hibi kore heion, naka yoku nombiri, non-non biyori)"

– A catchphrase for the Non Non Biyori manga[note 1]

This catchphrase shows that the kanji notation for "Non Non Biyori" is "穏々日和". The whole phrase can be translated as follows: "A school in the countryside, where every days are peaceful. We spend carefree time together. It's a great day for our peaceful lives."

  • "穏" (on) means calm/quiet.[1] This kanji is read as "non" in this phrase instead of the regular reading "on". The reason of this reading is described later in this section.
  • "々" is an iteration mark.[2] That is, "穏々" can be written as "穏穏" and "々" is read as "non" in this phrase.
  • "日和" (hiyori, biyori in rendaku form) means weather/condition/situation, especially an ideal weather for an activity.[3]

There are some possible reasons why "穏" is read as "non":

  • It might be because the "穏" used here is took from some words in which "穏" is read as "non", e.g. "安穏" (an-non, "peaceful/quiet").[4]
  • Atto might have woven Renge's habitual saying "non" into this title. (Or the other way around, her habitual saying might have taken from this title.)
  • Some Japanese words that mean "carefree/easygoing" have "のん" (non/nom) sound in them, namely "のんき" (nonki) and "のんびり" (nombiri).[5][6] The "Non Non" part of the title might be coined from there words and the kanji notation "穏々" might be made later for the catchphrase choosing a kanji that suits the peaceful atmosphere of the manga well.

The words "nombiri" and "nonki" are used in the lyrics for the third season's ending theme.[note 2] These "non" sounds, including Renge's habit of saying and the third season's "nonstop", seem to be used as a sort of the symbol for the Non Non Biyori manga and anime.
